Field Story of the Week: The Era of Inflatable Decoys

Before YouTube and ultra-real, fully flocked paint schemes there was VHS, DVD, mail-order catalogs, and some unique innovations emerging in the waterfowl world. Like these Featherlite inflatable duck decoys that Danny Morrison from Abandon Outdoors was fortunate to find and hunt with this past season.

“With recent duck hunts requiring a lot of hiking to escape pressure, my mind kept drifting back to those old inflatable decoys from the Duck Men DVDs I grew up on. As a kid, I thought they looked terrible. I was convinced they wouldn’t work. Decades of chasing mallards has humbled me, I’ve  realized that the most “realistic” floater rarely makes or breaks a hunt. I mean, guys still stack ‘em over spray painted 2 liters. I found a 6-pack on Marketplace for $20 and took them out the next day. Wouldn’t you know it? They worked like a charm. There’s something special about running the same gear I watched Phil use when I was a kid. Those videos were the original spark that led me to start filming my own hunts. I owe a lot to that man.” – Danny Morrison
