Need to Know:

  • Alberta adds Sandhill Crane hunting season starting September 1st, 2020.

  • Sandhill Crane hunting will require a provincial game bird license as well as a federal migratory bird license.

  • Season will be in more than 50 Wildlife Management Units in southern and east-central Alberta.

  • Outfitters in Alberta will now be able to offer sandhill crane hunts which will be a great benefit for the avid waterfowl hunter.

Good to Know:

  • Sandhill Crane hunting has existed in Saskatchewan and Manitoba for over 50 years, the sandhill crane population has persisted throughout this time, Minister of Environment and Parks Jason Nixon added: “It’s great to see widespread support for a sandhill crane season in Alberta, which will support the province’s wildlife management goals and boost local economies”

Fun to Know:

There are more than 600,000 sandhill cranes across North America.

The Sandhill Crane is nicknamed the “rib eye of the sky” due to its taste and appearance!
