On Wednesday, two hunters and their dogs were found dead by the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) after they went missing while hunting. The individuals were identified by HCSO as Alexander Karl Getz (38) and Peter James Kaminsky (31), both Miami residents. The men were found near Lake Okeechobee, a popular duck hunting spot, along the C-41A canal.
Initial findings from HCSO indicate the cause of death was a lightning strike, but medical examiners have yet to confirm the official cause and time of death.
While it’s not confirmed, it is believed the two hunters were targeting early season teal, as the season opened on Saturday and ran through Wednesday. The two hunters were likely scouting or hunting with their dogs when a thunderstorm came through.
Florida is known as the lightning strike capital of the United States, recording between 1.2 and 2 million strikes per year. Its humid climate and flat landscape create daily thunderstorms, especially in the summer.
Regardless of where you hunt, it’s important to know proper safety in the event of a storm. If possible, leave the area you are hunting and seek shelter in a car or building. If you are stuck in a storm, stay away from open fields and areas where you are the tallest object. Also, remember to stay away from tall trees, poles, or other elevated structures. While they may cover you from the rain, lightning is drawn to high points.
