SR: Why do you hunt ducks/geese with bow? How did you get into it?

MH: I love the challenge! Bow hunting & waterfowl hunting have been my passion for years, and one day I decided to combine the two which sparked the flame.

SR: Some info on your strategies, equipment used, etc?

MH: Kings Camo is my go to for any hunt. I shoot a Hoyt Carbon spyder ZT with Native Hunting Gears “HeatSeeker” shafts tipped with a Muzzy 3 blade Broadhead. Spot and Stalk is a riot but I love watching birds land in the decoys!

SR: Best hunt thus far?

MH: Dude, Gotta be the day  I shot my limit of geese including two neck collars. Unreal day! I am still on cloud 9!

SR: Worst hunt thus far?

MH: Ive had a few, but two days really stick out. I found a muddy deep sink hole and my waders filled with water and I began going under. I thought I was a goner! I don’t know how I managed to get out, big guy upstairs was watching over me that day!

The second, would be the day I had a hunter sneak up and shoot the shit out of my brand new decoys with his shotgun. I was pissed! haha

SR: Success rate? Number of arrows lost? Total number or ducks/geese harvested?

MH: I miss more then I hit hahaha I go through on average about 3 dozen arrows a season. I have killed roughly 80 ducks and around 40 geese.

SR: What else do you archery hunt? Total number of big game animals harvested?

MH: I have killed a dozen big game animals and numerous upland game birds. From grouse, Pheasant, Fox to Elk I love bow hunting it all!

SR: Do you ever have other waterfowl hunters talk trash or give you shit because of how you hunt?

MH: Of course! Shooting them on the water with my bow tends to ruffle some feathers, I have killed them in the air but most of my kills are on water and that tends to piss people off. I just tell them it’s a lot harder than it looks.

SR: Thoughts on an extended “archery only” season for waterfowl?

MH: I am all for it! I love the idea and it will encourage more people to give it a shot!

SR: Best tip for a beginner to try it?

MH: Same thing I tell the girls I date. Prepare to be disappointed. haha In all seriousness, prepare to lose A LOT of arrows, be patient and scout! Learn the birds and spend a lot of time patterning them.
